History

Haulfryn%20history%20strip.jpgHaulfryn translates as "sunny hill": a reference to the south east facing aspect that Haulfryn House enjoys, and to the Gulf Stream induced mild climate of Abersoch and the Llyn Peninsular.

Haulfryn House and estate was established in 1908 by Frank Charles Minoprio, a cotton merchant of the city of Liverpool, founder member and first commodore of the South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club (1924), and High Sheriff of Caernarvonshire (1934). His vision and imagination led to the the creation of Haulfryn House and gardens in the period 1908-1929. Examination of the plaster work in the house, and wall mounted plates in the conservatory (photos on this page) give an insight into the pastimes and pleasures of the family at this time - largely unchanged in the modern era.

Haulfryn remained a much loved retreat for the Minoprio family for the best part of the 20th century, until it was bought by the current owners (MacLennan family) in 1994, who lovingly restored Haulfryn House and gardens for the enjoyment of all.

The distinctive house and garden stone work are granodiorite, a warm granitic rock which forms the prominent headland between Llanbedrog Village and The Warren. The long abandoned quarries used to build Haulfryn are easily visible from Abersoch village and beach. The distinctive sun patio table and chairs, and tennis pavilion, are even more locally sourced, being cut from a Macrocarpa Pine in the house gardens. Curious children will also find a "Giant's Chair" cut from the same tree in the gardens........but where.............?
